Gas engineers have rushed to the scene of a crash involving a van.
Police were called to the A404 London Road, Rickmansworth, this morning (January 22).
A van crashed into a traffic island, knocking over a post. The van driver was not injured.
However, police were concerned about possible damage to a gas main.
Gas company Cadent and National Grid are at the scene, near Batchworth Golf Course, and engineers are currently working by the island.
There is a smell of gas in the air.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue also received an emergency call, but the scene is understood to be safe so their attendance was called off.
The A404 is open to traffic both ways, but two police officers are currently directing drivers past the incident.
There are some delays on the A404.
A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "Police were called just before 11.10am to reports of a collision in London Road, Rickmansworth.
"A van had collided with a lamppost and is believed to have resulted in a gas leak.
"National Grid is in attendance in order to deal with the leak.
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible as there is some traffic congestion.
"The van driver was not injured in the collision."
