A residential street has been divided in half after part of the road surface appeared to collapse earlier this week.
A large pothole appeared in Liverpool Road, Watford, on Wednesday.
The road surface has broken away and requires a complex repair.
The county council says the hole "exceeds standard pothole damage".
Investigations into the damage to the road are ongoing.
The hole is on the edge of the road and a parking space and Hertfordshire County Council has decided the safest course of action is to close the road.
The hole is protected by barriers and then some higher metal fencing.
Ringway, the county council's contractor, has been given a permit of until January 22 to complete the work.
