A parish councillor who set up a charity to help veterans get the help they need has been honoured for her work.
Abbots Langley parish councillor Liz Burns was presented with an award by Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss CBE on Saturday (July 20).
Cllr Burns - who represents the Leavesden ward - set up Veterans’ Support Group Abbots Langley after he husband died six years ago.
Her husband served 27 years with the Royal Marines Police Force and she was motivated to set up the charity to enable veterans to get the support they need.
Her group is part of Watford’s One Vision initiative, which aims to bring together community groups.
High Sherriff of Hertfordshire Sarah Beazley congratulated Cllr Burns.
She said: “Thank you to so many people who give up so much time to make the county of Hertfordshire a better place for all of us.
“We support each other and care for each better if we work together.”
Representatives from 19 charities gave presentations of the work they do in Watford including police, Neighbourhood Watch, the Fire Service, Watford and Three Rivers Trust and various women’s and health groups.
Also present at the event was Peter Taylor, the Mayor of Watford, Watford Borough Council chairman Cllr Asif Khan and Cllr Rabi Martins representing Watford Rotary Club.
One Vision chairman and event organiser Enoch Kanagaraj said: "This community day will benefit the locals and the other charities to help each other. One Vision continues to lead to bring people together.
"As the chairman of One Vision project, Stanborough Park, I’m very delighted to see this project grow and strengthen to help the needs in the community.”
