The Conservative candidate in next year’s mayoral election paid a visit to Downing Street to get the backing of the Prime Minister.
George Jabbour, who is hoping to take over from current Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill when she steps down in May 2018, posed for a picture with Theresa May last week alongside with Watford Conservatives' chairman Linda Topping.
However, the Observer was unable to get clarification from both the Conservative Party HQ and Downing Street about whether Mrs May supports his election bid.
Mr Jabbour said: “As Mayor, I will work with everyone, from our local community, to the elected representatives from all parties on our borough council, our re-elected local MP Richard Harrington, the County Council, the Government and the Prime Minister in the interests of the residents of Watford. So much more can be achieved when we all work together."
Ms Topping added: "With his skills in engineering and his investment background together with his business experience, George is the best possible candidate for Mayor of Watford.”
Mr Jabbour will compete for the title alongside Liberal Democrat candidate and current deputy mayor Peter Taylor, who has vowed to be the Watford’s “biggest champion” if he is elected.
Mr Taylor said: “The mayor has got to be the biggest advocate for the town and I know I could be Watford’s biggest champion, as I want to see improvements being made to ensure the town keeps running smoothly and efficiently.”
The Labour mayoral candidate will be announced at the end of October.
