George Michael fans will come out in force to dance and sing the night away at a charity event in memory of the star.

The George Michael Appreciation Society is hosting a tribute disco to raise money to restore and repair a scout hut in Little Bushey Lane, Bushey, where George held his first gig.

The event’s organiser described the singer, who was found dead at his home on Christmas day, as an “inspiration”.

Tracey Wills, 44, of Ashfield Avenue, Bushey, said: “The whole community has come together to help with this disco.

“George was very loved by the Bushey community. The school has offered to let use their hall for the disco and we have Betty and Dolly's salon, in Harcourt Road, selling tickets.

“We also have got help from Mable’s Tea Rooms and The Three Crowns Pub. It is a big community effort.”

Michael - whose real name was Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou - sold more than 100 million albums throughout a career spanning almost four decades.

Born in East Finchley in 1963, Michael spent most of his childhood in Kingsbury, attending Kingsbury High School.

His parents later moved to Radlett, Hertfordshire, where he attended Bushey Meads School.

The 53-year-old former Bushey Meads School pupil, who rose to fame as the front man of Wham! and had chart-topping hits including Last Christmas, died peacefully at home, his publicist said.

Mrs Wills added: “We only have a capacity of 200 people and the Facebook group we set up after he died has more than 200 people.

“People are already wanting to buy tickets. This is something we want to do on a regular occasion. He was a big part of the Bushey community.”

The Too Funky School Disco: Tribute to George Michael disco will be held at Bushey Meads School on July 1 and a book of condolences will be there for people to sign.
