A MOTHER from Abbots Langley is establishing her own charity fundraiser in memory of her mother who died from cancer.
Lucy Squance is looking for help to get people onto the streets and take part in a 24-hour Relay For Life, in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Lucy, from College Road, Abbots Langley, lost her mum Gail Jakes, 46, to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in July 2003.
Five weeks later, she got married to Gareth in Northern Ireland and the couple now have a one-year-old son, Daniel.
Lucy said: "My mum was going through treatment for a year. She was doing really well but she had rheumatoid arthritis since she was 21 and her body was so weak."
Gail had chemotherapy and stem-cell therapy but died before she could see her daughter walk down the aisle.
When her mum died, Lucy felt "compelled" to give something back to the charity that supported Gail's treatment and now wants to organise the first Relay For Life in Watford.
Relay For Life involves teams walking round a pre-determined course for between 12 and 24 hours. It begins with a Survivors' Lap of Honour and during the evening, a Candle of Hope ceremony is held in memory of people who have died from cancer.
Lucy said: "It's an unforgettable experience. It raises money for a fantastic cause, it celebrates those who have survived cancer and it enables friends and family to spend time together.
"Ninety-nine per cent of our money comes from volunteers and people fundraising."
Relay For Life events are already planned in St Albans on Saturday, June 16, and in Harrow on Saturday, September 8.
