The police officer who had his arm savaged by a dog is still recovering from his injuries.

PC Mo Huzair, from Watford, was rushed to hospital on Tuesday with serious injuries after attempting to gain control of a loose dog.

At about 5.30pm, the police received reports of a dog approaching members of the public near Eastbury Road.

PC Huzair approached the animal - a Japanese Akita, which is thought to have escaped from a nearby house, and took hold of it.

The dog, believed to be called Reggie, then attacked him, mauling his arm, and left him with serious injuries.

He was initially taken to Watford General Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Free Hospital in London for an operation to repair the damage caused.

The dog, one of a pair often seen exercising in the park, was subsequently captured and is now in the care of Hertfordshire Constabulary pending the result of an investigation into the matter.

Originally bred for fighting and hunting, the Akita is the largest breed native to Japan. An Akita pup costs about £800.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control in a public place.
