Golfers will next month celebrate Rickmansworth Public Golf Course's 70th anniversary as a public course in May 2007.
Situated on Moor Lane and originally part of the Moor Park Estate, the course was designed by legendary architect Harry Colt, who also designed St Andrews and Augusta.
In 1937, Rickmansworth Urban District Council purchased 350 acres of Moor Park estate to stop further housing development on the land. The council gave a 40 year lease to Moor Park Golf Club and in return insisted that one of the three courses be made available to the public and so the East course was designated as the public course.
Gordon Sharp, Captain of Rickmansworth Golf Club, which was formed 63 years ago, said: "I joined the club because of the course's reputation, it really is a true test of golf but it's also maintained to a very high standard throughout the year."
On Thursday, May 10, golfers who were born in 1937 can play on the 18 hole course for free and players over the age of 60 can play for the anniversary price of just 70p. There will be a slice of free anniversary cake and a cup of tea for players in the Fairway Inn.
Friday, May 11, is Man in a Van Day although ladies are positively encouraged to join in the fun. Chippies, brickies, plasterers, plumbers, electricians and painters can play for 70p when they leave their business card at the Pro Shop.
Saturday, May 12, is Family Fun Day with events teeing off from 1pm when Rickmansworth Golf Club will be entering into the Rickmansworth Carnival Parade with a float depicting the history of the course.
