A veterinary centre in Watford is fundraising for a charity which cares for swans.
Swan Care is run single-handedly by Lis Dorer, who provides care for swans in south west Hertfordshire that have been injured.
The sanctuary, which was set up by Lis 28 years ago, takes in injured swans and nurses them back to health. Many of them are released at Rickmansworth Aquadrome once they are back in good health.
Lis, who has dedicated her whole life to looking after swans, began work with the Save Our Swans Trust, caring for swans that had been poisoned by lead in the Thames, before establishing her own swan sanctuary.
Since Swan Care was established it has been the focus of Lis' life. On top of food and medication she must also fund the maintenance of the sanctuary, and recent storms have caused significant damage to the shelters.
Getting this damage repaired is extremely important as cygnets will start to be born at the end of April and at the moment there is nowhere for them to be housed.
Park Veterinary Centre in Cassiobury Drive is hoping to raise funds to rebuild the sanctuary before the cygnets start arriving by holding a raffle. Tickets cost just 25p and there is an array of prizes on offer, including chocolate, alcohol and perfume. Tickets can be bought from the park Veterinary Centre in Cassiobury Drive, or from their Leavesden practice in Katherine Place, and will be drawn on Friday, May 25.
