MPs will today debate a bill that could seem them become exempt from Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
Former Conservative chief whip David Maclean introduced the measure in a private member's bill.
He does not want letters written on behalf on constituents to be published.
However, any FOI exemption would also impact other matters such as MPs' expense claims.
Critics claim the bill would allow MPs to hide behind the new legislation, as it would remove the Commons and House of Lords as public authorities obliged to release information.
