Greengrocer Roy Brown has been given a community award for his work with a local football club.

Roy, who has lived and worked in Bushey all his life and used to run AD Brown and Son greengrocers in Bushey High Street and Harcourt Road, now lives in Mill Way and continues to supply local businesses with fruit and veg.

Earlier this month, the 51-year-old was given a community award by Hertsmere Borough Council to recognise more than two decades of work he has put into helping run Bushey Rangers Football Club.

Roy first became involved with the club when his uncle Trevor, the team's goalkeeper, started taking him to watch the matches at King George's Recreation Ground in 1960.

Roy's uncle, Trevor Grace, suddenly died of cancer on Wednesday and Roy has dedicated his award to his memory.

He said: "It is just one of those things that sticks in my mind.

"I used to go down there on Saturday afternoons and watch Trevor play in goal. I remember there was a lot of local Bushey people who played in the team."

Roy continued to be involved with Bushey Rangers, playing for the team for a season when he was a 15-year-old right midfielder, and was quick to take his eldest son, Warren, to the club when he was ten-years-old, in 1988.

Roy went on to coach the junior teams, manage the first team and fill the role of chairman of the club from 1992 until he stepped down last year. He was also frequently required to put his DIY skills to the test.

The club now has a total of 17 teams of all age ranges, including five girls sides, and play at the Moatfield, in Bournehall Lane And although Roy has decided it is time to step aside to spend more time with his three children, Warren, 29, Carly, 26 and Gavin 23 and two grandsons Jake and Ollie, he admits he will always be involved with the club in some capacity.

He said: "To me it is the centre of old Bushey'."
