MCDONALD'S has withdrawn an application to open its restaurant at 331 St Albans Road for longer hours after strong opposition from residents and businesses.

The fast food chain had applied to Watford Borough Council to extend its opening hours on Fridays and Saturdays to cater for late-night revellers.

The proposed opening hours were to be from 6.30am to 5am the following morning, but the application was withdrawn before it was due to be discussed at a meeting of Watford Borough Council's licensing sub-committee on Tuesday afternoon.

The news was greeted with delight by Jeff Giles, aftersales manager at Northern Motors, next door to McDonald's, who said that its premises already suffer from criminal damage which would only get worse if the restaurant was to open into the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings.

"To have the restaurant open until 5am would be asking for more trouble," Mr Giles said. "There is of course also the question of the nuisance factor."

At the time of going to press a representative from McDonald's was not available for comment.
