Housing is the most important issue facing Watford residents, the town's mayor said this week.
Dorothy Thornhill was speaking following the release of figures showing homes in Watford and the surrounding area are so expensive they are beyond the reach of key workers and those on average salaries.
According to data from Halifax, the average home in the town now costs £239,316 compared with £162,583 just five years ago.
But salaries for key workers have not increased at the same rate, pricing them out of the market.
Firefighters and nurses are worst hit, and would now have to spend more than nine times their annual salary to purchase the average property.
This compares with an outlay of seven-and-a-half times their salary in 2002.
