To write a book about a man who died before you were born may seem a daunting task but for author Mary Hallett, it was a labour of love.
The 46-year-old, who was "born and bred" in Kings Langley, took on the task when she began to help her father research the life of village resident Christopher Cox, who won the Victoria Cross as a stretcher bearer during World War One.
The expertise she gained while writing her book, Without Hesitation, was put to good use when she spoke at Kings Langleys Parish Council's annual meeting last week.
It followed the recent dedication of a memorial to Christopher in the French town of Achiet-le-Grand.
Without Hesitation, by Mary Hallett, is available from Montagues Newsagents, High Street, Kings Langley, the Kings Langley Local History Society or www.fourbears.worldonline.co.uk.
