WEAPON detectors are to be erected at train stations in Watford targeting youths going to an under-18s disco night.

The metal arches will be installed at Watford Junction, Lower High Street and the Metropolitan line stations for the first time on Sunday.

The airport-style scanners, which were first introduced by British Transport Police in London last year, will pick up knives guns and other offensive weapons.

The initiative follows a spate of trouble and anti-social behaviour among teenagers going to a disco at the Area night club in central Watford.

Chief Inspector Matt Nicholls said: "A number of people from outside Watford have been travelling into the town on the under 18s disco nights looking to cause a disturbance.

"By putting the metal arches at the train stations we can stop people bringing in offensive weapons. If the arch detects a weapon, the person will be searched and their weapon confiscated and they will be arrested."

Everyone passing through the train stations will have to go through an arch but police expect that only a few will be searched.

Chief Insp Nicholls added: "The message to the few people intent on ruining the night of the majority who come into the town to enjoy themselves is either don't come to Watford, or face arrest."

Fifteen police officers with arches and hand-held metal detectors will be involved in the operation which is part of the Safer Neighbourhoods scheme.
