Fancy a giggle? Garston comic Phil Butler is launching his own comedy club, The Giggle Inn, at The Pump House Theatre at the start of next month, promising “fantastic names” from the stand-up circuit and some local talent into the bargain.
“I want to make it a type of comedy club that Watford hasn’t seen before. It’ll be a club for comedy fans, no stag and hen parties and no excessive drinking.
“It’ll also be run by a comic who knows exactly what to do in order to make a club work.”
Formerly a children’s magician, Phil started his career at the tender age of 18, and has now been producing what he terms “magic comedy” for the past 22 years. He cut his comedy teeth on cruise ships and end-of-the-pier shows, and has worked the comedy circuit for the past nine years. He says this has allowed him access to top touring comics, whom he hopes to showcase in Watford.
Phil has also spent time entertaining British troops out in Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia, Croatia and several times in Afghanistan. He is currently producing and hosting a Podcast called The Green Room, which is recorded backstage on the comedy circuit with interviews and clips of the show. The straight-talking 40-year-old is also a presenter, writer, actor, voice-over and warm-up artiste, so you’ll be in safe hands when he comperes the night, which kicks-off on October 3.
I asked Phil to describe his guests in the manner of a piece of stage patter, so audiences can get a taste of what’s on offer. Here’s what he had to say: “The opening night of the Giggle Inn is an absolute humdinger, in fact, dingers haven’t hummed this loudly in Watford in a long time.”
King of the one-liner and star of Mock the Week, Milton Jones is headlining.
“Milton comes to us fresh from his brilliant appearance on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. Audiences may also know him from his Radio 4 shows or his book Where Do Comedians Go When They Die?
“Well, it won’t be at this new comedy club, as we also have Mike Gunn on as support. Marvellously morose and dead-pan Mike will have you crying with laughter.”
As well as Phil, audiences closer to home will recognise another name from the line-up.
“Finally with one foot in the grave, we’re hoping that Barry from Watford will live long enough to give us the benefit of the wisdom he has accumulated in his 82-years on this spinning globe. He won’t be phoning in his ramblings like he does on Steve Wright’s Radio 2 show or Iain Lee’s Absolute show, he’ll be there in person, and although his Margaret won’t be there; we do encourage groupies to keep their hands to themselves.”
