Football and dance, music and the cut-throat world of financial trading fuse in an exciting talent showcase by Harrow’s leading dance company Srishti- Nina Rajarani Dance Creations, which comes to The Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead this month.

These Are a Few of My Favourite Things celebrates the 20th anniversary of choreographer Nina Rajariani’s stellar career and marks her return to the UK stage as a dancer, after a three year absence following the birth of her two youngest children.

Now a mother of four, Nina set up her dance school in Harrow in 1991.

The company has a passion for the South Asian classical dance Bharatanatyam and for Karnatic music, its musical accompaniment, Nina’s was awarded the MBE last year for her Services to South Asian Dance.

The show is a collection of Nina’s most acclaimed choreography, starting with the classical love story Shringara (2005). Danced by Nina in full Indian dress, this love story is in contrast to the more contemporary themes of a football match, Bend It... (2008) and the Place Prize winning QUICK!, inspired by the frenetic life of city traders.

“My aim is to show how traditional Bharatanatyam dance can still be very modern in the way it is presented. I don’t feel I need to mix in a fusion of dance styles; there is room for innovation within the form.

“We want our work to be seen as a dance form in its own right. It shouldn’t be a barrier to people, it should be accessible to people from all walks of life.”

The dance showcase is at The Old Town Hall, High Street, Hemel Hempstead on Tuesday, March 16 at 8pm. Details: 01442 228098 www.oldtownhall.co.uk
