Wandering monks and hunting parties are among the inspirations for Watford Philharmonic Society’s opening concert for its 74th season, which features Carl Orff’s pastoral Carmina Burana and excerpts from Hadyn’s The Seasons.
Orff’s work was inspired by 12th and 13th Century songs by free-thinking monks, the Goliards, which he arranged under themes of springtime, in the tavern and courtly love. It is framed by the O Fortuna chorus, which is frequently used in TV adverts, including the Old Spice theme.
The programme begins with the final two parts from the Haydn’s masterpiece, which echoes Orff’s work.
The choir from the Watford Grammar School for Girls will join the the society for the performance at Watford Colosseum on Wednesday, November 12 at 7.30pm.
