Art on the streets is the theme for this year’s St Albans Art Society’s Summer Exhibition as not only have members been out sketching to create a special feature of public art works titled St Albans Street Scene but for the first time the event features an accompanying art trail.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to pick up a leaflet, follow the trail and discover the wealth of creativity St Albans has to offer in terms of street art and architecture that they might not have noticed before.
Now in its 61st year, the summer exhibition is returning to the Old Town Hall for a second year thanks to a community grant awarded to the St Albans Art Society by the District Council.
More than 300 entries have been submitted for the exhibition under four trophy-winning categories.
Former society chair, Mary Newbery, will again present the St Albans Trophy this year. Mary donated the trophy to be presented to the artist who best depicts St Albans in an original way.
Hundreds of paintings, sculpture, glassware, cards and prints will be on display alongside pieces of 3D work, covering a wide variety of subjects and media.
As well as visiting the exhibition, all the works submitted will be available to view via an online picture gallery.
The free exhibition is at the Old Town Hall, Market Place, St Albans from Friday, July 27 to Saturday, August 4 open daily 10am to 6pm. On Saturday, July 28, the St Albans Art Society will again be featuring in a Local Artists’ Day at Waterstone’s book store in St Peter’s Street. Members of the society will be demonstrating their skills throughout the day and giving visitors a chance to try out their techniques.
