Chinese New Year is being welcomed in style by Watford’s DRUM (Disability Recreation Unity Movement) members, as it prepare for the launch of its The Orient Express exhibition this weekend.

The exhibition is based on China and the Far East and encompasses just about anything that can be described as oriental.

Kathy Foster, one of the volunteer art tutors, says: “As usual, members have risen to the challenge magnificently and have produced a huge variety of work within this theme, including drawings, paintings, wall hangings and decorated lanterns.”

The project also produced a multi-faceted Japanese screen and an enormous street-style dragon, to be paraded by wheelchair-bound members.

Manager Sarah Sullivan couldn’t be prouder of the group’s members.

“They continue to amaze me with their ‘Well, I’ll have a go at it’ attitude. It’s incredible really, most have had their lives turned upside down by a sudden accident or illness, most haven’t done art since leaving school and most of the artwork is created using just one hand!”

A highlight of the exhibition is a series of terracotta warrior heads, a homage to China’s famed Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

Sarah says: “The terracotta warrior heads have been one of my favourite projects, although an absolute nightmare to fire in the kiln!”

Ceramics tutor Juliette Purdy said the figures had proved quite challenging.

“But our talented members have more than risen to the challenge and have produced some stunning, successful work,” she says. “Overall the results are incredible and, as always, I have been so impressed by the talent and passion for creativity that DRUM’s members have.”

DRUMS’ The Orient Express is at Parkgate Community Centre, Southwold Road, Watford on Saturday, January 21 from 11am to 3pm and Sunday, January 22 from 1pm to 3pm. Details: 01923 442114, www.drum.btck.co.uk
