World War Two certainly brought out the best in some people but for Jean Jupe (nee Hunt) it was a time for high jinx as well as danger as she enjoyed her formative years in Watford.
Jean lived in the town for 35 years before relocating to Lincolnshire but she is coming back to Watford Library to read from her book: A Different Kind of Childhood – Watford in World War Two.
Jean and her family moved to Watford in 1936 and her father, a compositor was among the first employees to work for Odhams printing house.
“The book starts in 1933 on the day of my birth. It details the exploits of two little girls during the war years and the antics they got up to, including the time I set my mother’s kitchen afire.
“My book is just the memory of one, but imagine if everyone wrote down just one memory; what a wonderful book that would be.”
Jean will be sharing tales from her life at Watford Central Library, Hempstead Road, Watford on Saturday, October 9 from 11am-12.30pm. A donation from book sales is going to the Help for Heroes charity.
