Barely nine months since it’s first screening, Watford Film Society has walked off with two national prizes.

Representatives from the community cinema scooped the award for best website presented by BBC Radio 4’s Francine Stock at last week’s British Federation of Film Societies annual conference. The society also won a distinction in the best newcomer category.

Watford Film Society chairman, Dr Tim Swanwick says: “In January this year we started from nothing and now we have a loyal membership and lots of exciting plans going forward.

“Our website has been at the centre of it all.”

Glancing at the site, it’s easy to see why the club has attracted more than 200 members and a visit to the society is an equally pleasant experience.

Films are accompanied by introductory talks and short films, plus there are industry Q&A sessions, exhibitions and members’ only events.

The next screening will be The Horror of Dracula at 7.30pm on Saturday, October 9 at Clarendon Muse, Watford Grammar School for Boys. Darren Elliott-Smith, film education coordinator at the University of Hertfordshire will open the evening with a talk on Hammer Films and the new wave of British horror.
