Digitally manipulated images and atmospheric landscapes are among the exhibits on display as part of XRR Photograhic Society’s latest display at Watford Museum.

The works of 12 members are on display including breathtaking images of natural forms captured by Watford artist Sarah Sands (neé How) of the Octavia Art Group.

Bill Cooper, the secretary of XRR, says Sarah joined the club only recently but has already shown considerable promise.

“She has a talent for composition,” explains Bill. “Sarah took up photography only four or so years ago and she won the Chiltern Association of Camera Club (CACC) Strictly Digital competiton last year.” XRR has recently started a new season’s programme of photographic evenings. Last week, they had a visit from local artist Carol Rogers, who critiqued members’ prints using her artist’s eye. The next event on the agenda is the Pre-Visions inter-club competition on Sunday, November 30, where more than 100 images will be considered and prizes awarded for the best digital prints and projected images. Bill says the event, which is open to the public, attracts more than 18 clubs from the Chiltern region: “In the evening there’s a digital audio-visual show presented by a guest speaker, Len Deeley FRPS, who specialise in underwater photography.”

Judging by the photographs in XRR’s exhibition the club has every chance of success in competition.

Among the exhibits is John Wood’s fishing boats, which Bill tells me has been produced using a high dynamic range (HDR) technique. “It consists of multiple images,” he says, “taken at different exposure values, which are combined to show detail in both highlight and shadow areas. Martin Malone’s St Paul’s at Dusk also uses the HDR technique.”

The XRR display is at Watford Museum, High Street, Watford until Sunday, November 9, open Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Telephone 01923 232297. Details: www.xrrphoto.org.uk
