It looks like it was a busy lunchtime in the kitchen when these pictures were taken in a village pub near Watford 50 years ago.

A Watford Observer photographer visited the Unicorn, in Abbots Langley, in July 1974 to capture pub goers enjoying a drink and a bite to eat, as well as capturing some exterior shots that will be instantly familiar to anyone who knows the pub.

An Ind Coope venue 50 years ago, the photo of the bar area shows that Skol, Double Diamond and Long Life were among the lagers and beers available on draught, while the well-stocked spirits shelves had well known brands such including Bell’s, Jameson and Teachers on sale.

We hope you enjoy looking through these pictures from our archive and they bring back memories for those readers who were regulars at the Gallows Hill pub, or more occasional visitors, back in the 1970s.
