“Mouldy” shelves and “filthy” floors have pushed a mum away from visiting a Watford supermarket again.

Sally Anne Chapman took photos of the Ascot Road Morrisons on Wednesday morning (October 2), showing some of the issues that she says have worsened over the last six months.

Similar gripes were also voiced by other people on social media, with one branding it "dreadful" and another speculating that it looked like it was closing down.

“We are pleased to confirm that the issues you flagged are now resolved,” a spokesperson said.

However, Mrs Chapman, who was formerly a regular customer, said she still has “no plans to go back” and that it looked like the dirt had built up over “months” without proper cleaning. She feels there has been a longer-term issue at the branch and doubts the problems will not just reoccur.

The mother-of-two first spoke with staff about the problems two months ago, and later took it up with head office without a response.

“They said it would be back to perfect again and it’s not,” she added. “Its not getting better, it’s getting worse. You notice it... it used to be a really good store.”

One of the snaps shows the half-empty deli counter, which the shopper noticed had “mould” on it.

Mrs Chapman said that if shoppers then buy the product, the mould gets on their hands, in carrier bags that are reused, and in home fridges.

"The cross contamination is massive,” she added.

Other photos taken on the same visit show damaged and “mucky” counters, dirty floors, and opened bags of sugar spilling out. Further issues that Mrs Chapman and others have raised include the salad bar rarely looking fresh, empty shelves, and a lack of staffed tills.

The Ascot Road Morrisons currently holds a 5/5 food hygiene rating, based on an inspection in June 2023.
