Black History Month in October marks the annual commemoration of the history, achievements and contributions of black people in the UK.

There are plenty of events in Watford celebrating black culture, so we picked out a few to look out for.

1. Dial Up open mic night

A free event at Watford Pump House invites attendees to share their music, poetry, passion and stories to celebrate community and creativity.

The event takes place on Sunday, October 6, at 3pm.

2. African Caribbean Association Charity Fundraising gala ball

In the first event since the pandemic, the gala returns. Attendees will be treated to a three-course meal with live entertainment, dancing and prizes.

On the website it says: "Get ready to enjoy delicious food, fantastic entertainment and the chance to support a great cause. Dress to impress in strictly black tie and enjoy a wonderful evening with friends, old and new."

Stand-up comedian Rudi Lickwood and singer Simone Robinson will grace the stage in addition to Hubbard Sax and DJ Mr Fixit.

Tickets range from £60 to £75 and the event will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Watford on Saturday, November 16.

3. Ballet Black double bill: Heroes

Now in its 22nd year, Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black returns to Watford Palace Theatre with a new double bill, Ballet Black: HEROES.

Award-winning choreographer, Mthuthuzeli November contemplates the purpose of life in 'The Waiting Game', and 'If At First' by Sophie Laplane, completes the double bill.

The show takes place on Wednesday October 9, with tickets ranging from £18.50 to £74.

4. Black History Month walk and talk 

Hosted by the Watford African Caribbean Association, the walk and talk will take place in  Cassiobury Park.

The two-hour leisurely discussion will take place on Saturday, November 2, between 11am and 1pm. For more details contact the association.

5. Black Is The Colour of My Voice the musical

James Seabright presents 'Black Is The Colour Of My Voice' written by Apphia Campbell at the Watford Palace Theatre.

On Thursday, October 4, the musical inspired by the life of Nina Simone will premier with a one-woman cast of Nicholle Cherrie.

Tickets range from £15 to £90 and can be purchased online.
