After 50 years of pulling pints for the Chipperfield community, a "lovely" pub landlord is set to retire.

David Clark has been The Windmill's landlord since 2001, having already worked at The Common boozer as bar staff and the manager for nearly 30 years.

The 73-year-old recalled many fond memories during a Watford Observer interview - with regular Morris dancing, darts and everyday customer interactions among the highlights.

He said: “It’s unique running a pub, it’s not your job it’s a way of life – you’ve got to enjoy it all. Even though I’m retired I am living down the road, so I will be able to keep coming to the pub.”

A statement on the pub's social media page also paid tribute to "our lovely Dave" and his "amazing 50 years of service to this pub".

The community have fundraised for a send-off party - involving a barbeque and live band - on Saturday, September 14.

"Let’s give Dave the most heart-warming send off that he deserves," the social media post added. "He’s been a fantastic boss and a wonderful part of our community for so long. He would love to see as many faces as possible."

David cited his age as the defining factor in his retirement as he believes there comes a time to “quit while your ahead”, especially when you're still “with it”.

Eamonn Glyn, vice chairman of Chipperfield Parish Council, said: “Dave was one of the characters of the village and the pub was always good fun, it always had a good local crowd.”

Despite aiming to step down in October, David said he will not let the pub close and will continue to fulfil his role until a replacement is found.

The pub's operator, Ringwood Brewery, is understood to be interviewing for a new landlord and a replacement is “on the horizon”, David said.
