C&A, Burton, Laura Ashley and Mothercare – these are just a few of the high street names that have been consigned to memory due to the changing face of retail in Watford and so many other towns up and down the country.

A Watford Observer photographer ventured into the town centre on a damp November day in 1987 to capture these shopping scenes in High Street, to the junction with Clarendon Road, and Market Street.

Although many of these once very recognisable brand names have disappeared altogether, some remain familiar to this day but have relocated to other premises in Watford.

They will also bring back memories of how this part of the town centre itself looked 37 years ago, including Charter Place and its fountain before the site was redeveloped to become part of atria Watford.
