Although this postcard is more than a century old, most of the buildings it depicts are still standing – except one.
The Watford Observer has again teamed up with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we look back at this scene.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This view is one of many postcards created by local photographer Frederick Downer.
“This card shows part of Abbots Langley near St Lawrence church – the church’s boundary stone wall can be seen on the left. On the right is part of a pub which I believe was the Kings Head.
“The original building was demolished and rebuilt in the 1960s but further back from the roadway so that the building had a forecourt.
“I believe the pub closed around 2005 and a restaurant opened in its place. It appears however that the other buildings in the scene are still standing.”
