The self-dubbed “UK’s number one food reviewer" has visited nine eateries in Watford and Bushey to deliver these verdicts.
Food Review Club, which has more than 850,000 followers on Facebook, taste tests local gems nationwide but has made just a few visits to the Watford area.
Overall the selection has performed pretty well in the scoring system.
See what the channel said about each below:
Zara Mangal – 8.9/10
One of host Matt’s first destinations was Zara Mangal in Market Street. The Turkish Barbeque restaurant presented him with a huge trayful of meat that he described as “truly amazing” and representing “huge value”.
XFC – 7/10
At XFC a smaller everyday special at just £2.99 was reviewed. Matt said it wasn’t a “world beater” but was “lovely” and “represented great value”.
When owner Fayaz Ahmed died after testing positive for Covid-19 in 2021 the channel went back to the 2020 review to leave a comment paying respects.
XFC has closed since the review.
Bazil – 6.7/10
Food Review Club was “kinda disappointed” with the first taste of Woodfired pizza shop Bazil in St Albans Road.
Matt wasn’t a fan of the cheese and said it was overall “just nice” but nothing special, admitting his standards had been going up after being too soft in earlier reviews he gave it a 6.7 score.
Smokey Boys – 7.4/10
Spotted on Instagram, Smokey Boys, in St Albans Road, was “spectacular” but the channel added it was a little pricey.
Overall the quality of food was judged to be excellent but the price held it back.
Vincenzo’s - 9.7/10
Vincenzo’s in Bushey High Street opened in September 2022 and was soon a destination for Food Review Club.
It was crowned the “number one pizza in the UK” out of everywhere visited up to that point.
Smash & Wings – 8.9/10
In a video uploaded the next day, Bushey High Street’s Smash and Wings also earned enough praise that Matt said “it turns out Bushey has the maddest food scene going”.
He said it was “remarkable” and gave it an 8.9.
Chicken Cottage – 8.6/10
Food Review Club cut the ribbon to officially open Watford’s branch of Chicken Cottage, in Harwoods Road, in March 2023.
Matt had given another branch a negative review years before, and said that although he was working with them he would call out issues, but in the end he came away feeling positive.
Wenzel’s the Bakers – 8.1/10
Food Review club came to Watford High Street to review Wenzel’s in March 2023.
He pitted it against rival Greggs and said he was not quite sure if the sausage roll was better but thought the other baked goods were “brilliant”.
Smash Shack – 6.9/10
Smash Shack took the channel to Watford Market to taste one of its burgers. Although the flavours got a positive reception there was criticism for the cheesy chips and the buns.
Overall, Matt said it showed “a lot of promise” and suggested that with small improvements it could be “really special”.
