A village near Watford has today been confirmed as a world record holder.
Kings Langley Carnival saw the village take on the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people dancing Oops Upside Your Head at once on June 24, this year.
Organisers had quickly let locals know that it could take until around Christmas before the achievement was verified but it was still an anxious wait until confirmation finally came today (December 12).
- Kings Langley Carnival: Oops Upside Your Head world record
- Bushey business named and shamed by HMRC for £33,995 tax dodge
- 'Man ran across road and hit taxi with knife outside supermarket'
The dance, to the 1979 The Gap Band song of the same name, involves sitting in rows with each participant sat between the legs of the person behind them and following along with the instructions in the lyrics.
The idea was first thought up by locals Bob Best and Liam Radmore, who heard the track on a building site around this time last year, with the carnival being seen as the best place to get a big enough crowd together. On the day, a total of 435 participants was certified by Guinness World Records.
“What a Christmas present for the village to receive,” said carnival chair Carol Chandler, who was heavily involved in organising the attempt and sending off the evidence and paperwork to the judges.
“Many thanks to you if you were involved in this fantastic community achievement – we couldn’t have done it without you.
“We will have the Guinness World Record certificate on display at the next carnival, on June 22, 2024.”
The record now appears on the Guinness World Records website. The entry says: “The largest Oops Upside Your Head dance consists of 435 people and was achieved by Carol Chandler and Kings Langley Carnival (both UK) in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, UK on June 24 2023.
“Event took place at Kings Langley Carnival, an event to unite the village community.”
Mr Best added: “It took a lot of effort from the carnival committee. It is a nice thing for the whole village, to be able to say you are a record breaker.”
One of the Kings Langley Matters Facebook group admins Anna Sapte said: “After 49 years of living here and Kings Langley born and bred - I am so proud to be a part of the fantastic village of Kings Langley.”
Many other locals also celebrated the “fantastic news” and congratulated the 435 participants.
