A Watford store is set to face a hearing over 24/7 alcohol sale plans after a neighbour objected.

The Asda On the Move at the A405 petrol station near Woodside Leisure Park has applied for a new premises licence to allow it to sell alcohol, to be consumed off the premises, at any time of day.

Conditions to be attached to the licence have been agreed between the applicant and police but a neighbour has objected to the proposal, meaning that Asda faces a hearing – due to take place at Watford Town Hall next Wednesday (December 6).

Update:

The meeting was cancelled after the objector removed their representation

The Sheepcot lane resident claimed that litter is a problem already, with broken glass left in the area, and added that he feels Asda and Esso (which runs the petrol station) are “very poor at keeping the area tidy and litter free”.

He added that 24/7 alcohol sale would “encourage youth/teenagers to hang around and lead to more localised crime/ vandalism and public nuisance”.

A report from Watford Borough Council officers acknowledges that the council’s environmental health team received complaints against the Asda in the past but, after monitoring it, “there was no evidence of an ongoing problem”.

In its application form, the supermarket laid out the steps it will take to comply with the council’s licensing objectives, including additional staff training in the sale of alcohol.
