A picture of Cliff Richard making a Watford girl’s dreams come true has been published several times by this newspaper since it was taken 60 years ago but what have been seen less often are images from his concert on that day – until now.
Watford Grammar School girl Sheila Liberty wrote to the Watford Observer asking to meet the music icon when he came to town on March 29, 1963 to perform with his legendary backing group The Shadows at the Gaumont Theatre.
Sheila’s wish was granted with the help of Cliff’s manager and she got the chance to meet the singer before he took to the stage to perform at the town centre cinema which later became the Odeon before it was demolished.
Cliff and The Shadows arrived in Watford dominating that week’s charts, with The Shadows’ Foot Tapper having replaced Summer Holiday at Number 1.
We hope you enjoy looking through these pictures from our archive that have not been published for many years of one of music’s most enduring performers on stage in Watford 60 years ago.
