There has been a flurry of positive responses after Dunelm confirmed it will be opening a store in atria Watford.
In late 2023 it will be moving into the unit that once housed John Lewis.
The new home furnishing store has been welcomed by many after John Lewis closed its doors in August 2020.
Vivien Waddock, 75, told the Watford Observer she has only been shopping in the town centre three times since Christmas because of its “state”.
The sales consultant who lives in Bushey said: “When you walk into the centre, especially the John Lewis end it is so depressing. There are so many pop-up shops now.
“But I think Dunelm will change that. I will be happy to see some life again.
“I hope it will have the café, like John Lewis did, it had such a nice atmosphere there.”
Vivien isn’t the only person who wants a café on site.
One person on social media said: “As long as it has a nice cafe to have a cheap baked potato, I'm good.”
While many retailers say they are struggling due to online purchases, one person sees the benefits of shopping in store.
They said: “Fantastic, won't have to buy online anymore.”
Another said: “I think Dunelm is a good shout and better than some of the other ideas I heard.”
Watford’s leaders have also backed the move.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said Dunelm’s move into Watford is “fantastic news for the local economy”.
He added: “This is also testament to the close work between Watford Council and Watford BID which ensures we have a vibrant, safe and successful town centre that everyone can enjoy.
“The addition of Dunelm, one of the UK's top homeware retailers, will not only enhance the town centre's appeal but also provide local residents with greater shopping options and show that Watford is open for business.”
Watford MP Dean Russell added: “It is fantastic news for our town centre, other local businesses, and consumers.
“I am sure that it will be a very popular addition to Watford."
Despite the overwhelming positive response, some people said they would have preferred a Matalan or Home Bargain store to have moved into the space.
