It was the year that would culminate in two of Elton John’s most famous concerts at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, but 47 years ago this week the music superstar played a much smaller sold-out show closer to home.
Elton played an 80-minute show at Bailey’s nightclub for an audience of 2,000 fans, who paid £2.50 for a ticket from joint sponsors the Watford Observer and Watford FC Supporters Club.
The gig on February 18, 1975 was held to boost the testimonial fund of Watford’s longest-serving player Johnny Williams and saw Elton take to the stage at his flamboyant peak.
However, more than 150 people never made it beyond security at the doors after paying up to £5 for forged tickets from touts.

What are your memories of Elton John's concert at Bailey's in February 1975?I won 2 tickets to the gig in a Watford Observer competition. I had to make up a 4 line poem about Elton and was one of the lucky winners. It was an amazing evening and the whole place was “bouncing”.
