An 'unsung hero' who kept a writers' group alive during the pandemic with weekly Zoom meetings has been presented with an award.

Helen Nicell, co-ordinator of Watford Writers Group and chairwoman of Watford Area Arts Forum, was given the award by Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor as part of a scheme to recognise the positive contributions many people made during the coronavirus pandemic.

She held weekly Zoom meetings for the Watford Writers Group in which they held workshops and competitions as well as enjoying socials together.

Mrs Nicell was presented with a certificate and hamper for her services to the Watford community.

Geoff Brown, a member of Watford Writers Group and one of the many people who nominated Helen, said: "Right through the pandemic Helen has worked tirelessly to keep this group going, investing an incredible amount of time and energy in doing so.

“Her relaxed and inclusive style has made relative newcomers to the group like myself feel very welcome and the Monday Zoom sessions have become the highlight of an otherwise bleak week for me and others who have been self-isolating.

“Helen is an example of selfless volunteering at its best and her contribution to Watford's cultural life deserves recognition."

Helen said: “I was delighted to be nominated to receive this award.

"During the pandemic, I was classed as clinically vulnerable due to secondary breast cancer.

"Organising the meetings has been a lifeline for me as well - and we continue to run the group online."

Mr Taylor added: "Thank you to Helen, and many other people in Watford, who have supported the town throughout the pandemic!

“The Unsung Hero Awards provide a great opportunity to say thank you to those who have helped others, no matter how big or small, during these particularly tough times.

“I’ve heard some incredibly inspiring stories across Watford, so I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been helping others. You really make a difference and our town is so grateful for your kindness.”
