Police have said the cause of death appears to have been a cardiac arrest.
An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to St Albans Road in Watford at 10.24pm yesterday with reports that a man was laying in the road.
"An ambulance, rapid response vehicle, a senior paramedic in a support vehicle and a response car from the Magpas Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.
"Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene."
The road was closed while police and ambulance crews attempted to save him before it was reopened around 11.45pm.
A resident living nearby said that “hero” paramedics did everything they could and ambulances arrived within about 10 minutes of the man being found.
