A decision over Tommy Smith’s future is expected in the near future as Watford hold a board meeting this afternoon to discuss Reading’s take-it-or-leave-it bid.

Yesterday it was reported Reading had made a £1.6m offer for Smith but the Watford Observer understands the Royals have actually matched Sheffield United’s accepted £1.8m bid.

Watford will not comment on the latest offer or the fee involved but have confirmed a board meeting will take place this afternoon to decide whether to accept the latest bid.

Chairman Jimmy Russo has stated on a number of occasions that he will not let Smith leave unless the club’s valuation is met and it is unclear whether the offer is £1.8m outright or consists of a number of add-ons.

Newcastle have enquired about the forward and with Damien Duff’s move to Fulham going through on Tuesday, the North East club may yet make an offer for Smith, who supported the Magpies as a youngster.
