Watford talisman Tommy Smith is having a medical at Reading today.

The Watford Observer understands Smith has been at the Royals’ training ground today having a medical and will not be travelling with the Hornets squad to Leeds this afternoon.

The Watford players are understood to have said their ‘goodbyes’ to Smith and the forward is not expected to play in tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie with Leeds United.

Just yesterday Watford chairman Jimmy Russo released a statement explaining the deal had collapsed due the Berkshire club’s reluctance to pay £200,000 based on appearances.

Former Watford manager Brendan Rodgers claimed Smith wanted to reunite with him at Reading six weeks ago and an agreement seems to have been met after three failed bids of around £750,000, £1.2m and last week’s offer.

Smith had been the subject of enquiries from Portsmouth and Newcastle United and Sheffield United had a £1.8m bid accepted last month, but the 29-year-old rejected the move because he doesn’t want to move his family.
