Joel Ekstrand is in talks over a move to Championship side Bristol City, the Watford Observer understands.
The 27-year-old was released by the Hornets at the end of the season after a four-year spell at Vicarage Road, during which time he made 100 appearances and scored two goals.
But the Swedish centre back looks like he will not be on the market for long, and is believed to be in talks with the Robins over the prospect of joining on a free transfer.
Ekstrand failed to make an appearance during the 2015/16 season after suffering cruciate ligament damage in a game against Ipswich in March 2015.
Towards the end of the last campaign however, he did feature for Harry Kewell's Under-21s as he recovered from the injury setback.
On the announcement of his departure from Vicarage Road earlier this month, he told the club website: "I'm 100 per cent fit and I've been training with the squad since December as well as playing for the Under-21s, so I'm ready for my next move, whatever it will turn out to be."
