A Rickmansworth bakery is holding free bread making lessons for children, to teach them the science of cooking.
Primary schools are being invited to apply for free breadmaking classes at Cinnamon Square’s baking laboratory called ‘The Makery.’ During the visit to the Church Street bakery, pupils will learn about ingredients such as yeast as gluten, and the science behind bread by participating in experiments.
Paul Barker, Cinnamon Square co-founder and master baker, said: "Over the years we have run baking sessions for local schools when it has formed part of their curriculum. "By being more proactive and offering the service free of charge, we hope to see more schools considering baking as an important part of early learning."
Mr Barker is a former employee of the Chorleywood Flour Milling and Bakery Research Association.
This is where 50 years ago, scientists discovered that by adding extra yeast, enzymes and chemicals, bread could be made in a fraction of the time.
However, 17 years ago Mr Barker he left his lab coat behind and turned his attention to more traditional methods of bakery.
His multi award-winning bakery, based in Rickmansworth, is an active member of the national "Real Bread Campaign". One of the objectives of the campaign is to promote Real Bread, which does not contain unnecessary ingredients.
The breadmaking classes are for children in years five and six from Watford, Croxley Green, Rickmansworth and Chorleywood Schools.
Mr Barker added: "After the lesson the teachers will take away all the necessary information to be able to repeat this breadmaking class within their own school environment. "I really want our local schools to become self sufficient in teaching our children baking skills and I will continue to provide support as required."
