A dental surgery in Watford is offering free oral cancer scans as part of Mouth Cancer Awareness Month.
Senova Dental Studio, in Beechen Grove, is offering free cancer scans to everyone during November in an attempt to raise awareness of the disease.
The month long scheme, which is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer, which they state kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined.
Jay Padayachy, a dentist at the private surgery, said: “In the way that women check their breasts for breast cancer and men check their testicles for testicular cancer, people should be checking their mouths.
“It is something that, if caught early, can nearly always be cured.”
The surgery ran a similar scheme last year, offering the five minute test to people across Watford, and didn’t find any cases of the disease.
Using a Velscope, a non-invasive screening system, the dentist is able to see cancerous cells before they come through the soft tissue in the mouth.
Mr Padayachy added: “We are used to looking at mouths every second of the day so we are in an ideal position to see something that doesn’t look right.”
“We want to get as many people through as possible and hopefully be able to give them the all clear.
“Some people want a check but are too scared to go to the doctors of their own dentist.”
For a free cancer screening visit the dental surgery or call 01923 233600.
