Rickmansworth Aquadrome is set to undergo vital conservation work following a recent funding boost.

A grant of £161,691 has been awarded to Three Rivers District Council by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, aiming to preserve and improve the natural environment within the aquadrome.

Council leader Sarah Nelmes said: “Receiving this grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible thanks to National Lottery players, is a significant stepping stone to understanding more and appreciating the aquadrome.

“The aquadrome is a very special place that is cherished by our residents and the local wildlife.

“That is why the council is committed to protecting and nurturing this unique nature reserve, and our work must enhance the site so that it can be enjoyed in the future and benefit everyone, from the wildlife to our community.”

The major focus of the project is gathering insights about the area's floodplain hydrological principles, species, and crucial habitats.

The collection of this information will guide future endeavours optimally, ensuring correct decisions about conserving, nurturing, and protecting the nature reserve.

The funds will also back staffing resources for project implementation.

Exploring options for habitat restoration will also form part of the project, including conducting a river habitat condition assessment and establishing a comprehensive baseline habitat survey.

The grant will have wider implications, supporting community engagement activities like workshops, activities to collect stories about the site's social and natural heritage, and public consultation on the proposed work.

Such activities aim to share Rickmansworth Aquadrome's significant story more broadly.

The grant contributes to the wider Aquadrome Project ambitions and will act as a precursor to a larger grant application to The National Lottery Heritage Fund due to be submitted at the end of 2024.
