A woman has died after she suffered a medical emergency while travelling on the M25.

Police say the female passenger passed away after emergency services responded to an incident near Watford around lunchtime yesterday (March 6).

The M25 was temporarily closed in both directions between junction 20 for Kings Langley and 21 for the M1 to allow an air ambulance to land.

But despite being treated by members of the emergency services, the woman died, Hertfordshire Constabulary confirmed.

No further details have been given at this stage about the victim. Her death is likely to be referred to a coroner.

The M25 closure was lifted in both directions at around 2.10pm.

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 12.21pm on Sunday 6 March to reports of a medical emergency requiring the air ambulance to land on the M25 in Hertfordshire.

"Officers assisted in closing the motorway between junctions 20 and 21 in both directions so that the passenger of a vehicle could be treated at the roadside. However, the woman sadly died.

"The clockwise carriageways were reopened just after 1.30pm and the full closure was lifted at around 2.10pm, with congestion taking some time to clear."

The incident caused considerable delays on the M25 as well as on surrounding routes such as in the Bricket Wood and Garston areas.

Roads were also busier than usual in the area because of the Watford football match which kicked off at 2pm at Vicarage Road.
