Two dogs that chased a deer in Cassiobury Park tore off a bit of its flesh, an eyewitness has claimed.

Police were called to Cassiobury Park last Friday (April 16) at around 6.45pm, to reports of two dogs chasing a deer and causing the animal to get stuck on a fence.

It is believed that the deer was stuck in the railings and bleeding heavily, with “chunks of flesh” torn from the deer’s hind.

Officers attended the scene, but by the time they arrived the deer had managed to free itself and ran off.

The RSPCA were also alerted.

A spokesperson from Hertfordshire Constabulary believes that the deer itself was not found after, and its condition after the attack is unknown.

An eyewitness who was concerned for the wellbeing of the deer tried to search the area, and fears that it could have died from the shock and the attack itself.

Police are hoping to trace the owners of dogs as further enquiries are being carried out.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: “This saddening incident, which must have been very upsetting to anyone who witnessed, it could have been avoided had the dog owner been responsible and kept their pet under control.

“We ask that dog owners be aware that there may be wild animals present when walking their dog and to keep their dog under control at all times.

“Dog owners have a legal responsibility under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to keep their dog under control in a public place.

“We want to reiterate to dog owners that there is a very simple way to stop these attacks – please keep your dog on a lead around livestock and wildlife.

“If dog owners can spread the word about being responsible around wildlife and livestock that will really help too.”
