Daniel Williams, 14, said a seven-year-old boy had told his father who works in the highway maintenance team who then alerted the fire brigade.
Daniel said he saw a van "spewing out smoke" which later led to the vehicle catching fire.
He praised the seven-year-old for his quick response.
He added: "I think it would have been worse if the boy wasn't there and damage would be caused to buildings around it."
