The headteacher of The Purcell School for Young Musicians in Bushey has handed in his resignation.
David Thomas will be leaving the school in summer 2015 after three years as headteacher.
He will be taking up the post of Master of Music at Winchester College.
Chairman of governors, Sir Roger Jackling, said: "Both the govenors and the school community will bid David a sad farewell when he leaves us next summer to pursue his original vocation in life, teaching and directing music.
"He will leave The Purcell School with a positive report from our recent school inspection and continuing musical successes, not least in this year's BBC Young Musician of the Year.
"We are all very positive about continuing to build on the success of David's leadership."
