Motorists are facing delays on the M25 as a lane is closed anticlockwise between Watford and Chorleywood.
Police and fire were called at 2.18pm and are still on the scene, where a white van caught fire on the hard shoulder causing the delays.
The fire is being treated as accidental.
Lane one of four is closed with traffic slow past the scene.
