A Watford superstore is the first of its kind to trial a dramatic revamp that aims to make the weekly shop a "more pleasurable experience".
Tesco Extra, in Lower High Street, has been redesigned and now offers a restaurant, coffee shop, food-to-go section and bakery.
Matthew Magee, spokesperson for Tesco, said: "It is laid out in a way that customers want to see.
"It is about creating a more leisurely and pleasurable shopping experience.
"The coffee shop and the restaurant mean that customers will be more likely to spend a bit more time over their shop and we’ve definitely seen a more relaxed feel in here since it’s opened, with people doing more browsing."
Recent investments in Harris & Hoole and Euphoria Bakery have brought the specialist coffee, cakes and bread to the superstore.
Mr Magee added: "This is a trial but if it works we are hoping to do similar things in other stores. We want to see what customers think. A lot of this concept could be the future."
The entire store now has a fresh look, with the clothing section designed to make the customer feel as if they are in a department store rather than a supermarket.
Daniel McHale, Tesco Store Manager, said: "We’re all really excited about the re-launch and welcoming customers back to their new-look store.
"It’s exciting to have new food concepts and improved departments under one roof. We have been working really hard to get the store ready for customers and all the changes have been made with them in mind so we can’t wait to hear what they think.
"We would also like to thank customers for their patience and understanding during our extensive work in store - when we re-launch we hope they will enjoy a new and exciting place to shop and spend time with their family and friends."
