This nimble little lorry designed to operate in tight and awkward areas may have been small but it was among the most famous vehicles produced by a Watford firm.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back at the Scammell Mechanical Horse.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This photograph is captioned 'The Mechanical Horse used to help the four-legged live variety up a steep hill’.

“Unfortunately, this image isn't dated but I believe Scammell, who developed and built the Mechanical Horse, began producing vehicles like this in the mid to late 1930s.

“In this instance, the vehicle belonged to LMS, one of the large railway companies in the UK at that time.

“I would imagine it was photographed somewhere in Tolpits Lane near Scammell’s factory.”
